Mythic MysteryThe Unfixed Meridians

The Cartographer's Debt

Every map she draws erases a place that used to exist.

Vessa Corvane is the finest cartographer of her age, and every map she completes is a small funeral. Ink down a coastline, and somewhere a fishing village slips out of every memory but hers. Fix a mountain pass, and the pass's old name dies with the shepherds who sang it. The Guild calls it the Settling — the world agreeing, at last, to be one thing. Vessa calls it by its older name: the Debt.

She keeps a private atlas of the erased — impossible places rendered in silverpoint, indigo, and gold. A lake shaped like an open hand. A city of bridges with no river. Her sister's house. The Guild says these places never existed, and the Guild is almost right. But at night the atlas rearranges itself, and lately the constellation lines she draws between lost places have begun pointing, all of them, toward somewhere unfixed.

Now the Guild has offered Vessa the commission of the century: a complete map of the Unfixed Meridians, the last unmeasured region in the world — the place the erased places go. Accept, and she may redraw everything the Debt has taken, her sister's front door included. But a map that complete has a price no ledger has ever balanced, and Vessa has begun to suspect the world is mapping her back.
